US artist Sarah Baker visits Galway Arts Centre to lead a fragrant duo of events to mark the closing of Product Recall.

Following an intensive workshop with actors from Red Bird Youth Collective. Baker and the Collective introduce a new reading of her faux 80s TV mini series Impirioso, a glittering drama exploring luxury, idolatry, scandal, and the constructs of dramatic television. A cursed logo of a famous family-run fashion brand instigates infidelity, betrayal, incest, and murder.

Baker creates a fictional brand, Impirio Rosso, and portrays the sordid affairs of luxury-obsessed Luccia Rosso, brought to life by actress Olivia d’Abo (Conan the Destroyer, The Wonder Years). The project is Inspired by Patricia Reggiani-Gucci, who served time in prison for killing her husband, Maurizzio Gucci. (This project was supported by Arts Council England for UH Galleries, University of Hertfordshire, Museum of St Albans, and Hatfield House.)

This is followed by a performative lecture by Baker about her practice and her current project, developing a perfume as an art work. Focusing on the production and reception of perfume and how that relates to art, the lecture includes a Skype interview with Saskia Wilson-Brown, director of the Institute for Art and Olfaction, LA. Saskia will be discussing her research into the 18th Century perfumes of the French Court, while Baker will have perfume samples of the era to pass around for the audience to experience this iconic moment in history through olfaction.

In closing, there will be an open discussion by Product Recall exhibition curator Anne Mullee.
