Red Bird Youth Collective Exhibition

Galway Arts Centre

26 January – 3 March

Opening: 26 January at 6pm

Red Bird Youth Collective’s latest exhibition Polymorphism opens Friday, January 26th at 6pm in Galway Arts Centre. This project was facilitated by Siobhan McGibbon, a visual artist interested in transdisciplinary practice, particularly the intersections between art and science. McGibbon works with sculpture, installation, drawing and animation. The goal of this project was to create a collaborative exhibition that brings together the different styles of each artist. The current project is enabled through the Arts Council’s Youth Ensemble Scheme 2017.

The term polymorphism refers to the state of existing in multiple forms at once. Speaking about the process, members of the collective stated: “We chose this word as the title to our process based sculpture project as we felt that each of us created our sculpture about an unseen part of us; the part of us that is not necessarily obvious in the people we are on the outside every day. We learned many practical skills throughout this project from sculptor Siobhan McGibbon, such as mould making with clay and rubber in order to realize our wax-finished pieces.”

Red Bird Youth Collective is a visual art group for young people in Galway city & county. Established in September 2011 by Galway Arts Centre, it has received funding from The Arts Council, NYCI, & Galway County Council to deliver large scale, youth-led projects in collaboration with professional artists. Red Bird members work together on a diverse range of projects, including visual art, film, architecture, digital media, performance and literature. Red Bird also learn the administrative background to these projects, enabling them to recreate similar ventures outside of the group.
