Art is expression, art is communication. It is a way of creating personal life experiences, making feelings felt, thoughts visible, identity shaped.
My TRIBE is a collaborative dance project between Genevieve Ryan, Red Bird Youth Arts Collective and Galway Youth Theatre. My TRIBE themes include mind-body connection through movement and expression, issues of identity and mental health, and exploring worlds outside of the tribes we become part of as we grow. The aim of this project is to offer creative youth an opportunity to immerse themselves in an intense, stimulating and creative experience of dance theatre. Participants will be provided with the tools to allow them the opportunity to be introduced, to understand, to develop and to create that which evokes a sense of identity as well as self-expression. During these unsettled times this project will provide Galway’s creative youth with a space where they will be supported to express themselves in a collaborative way. This project will be a coming together of youth highlighting the power of communities working, creating and performing together through process and development.
The project will entail a series of dance workshops online and in person to then create a short film that will be shown as part of TRIBES Youth Arts Festival. Workshops will focus on process and experimentation, examining how self and identity have been impacted by lockdown, social distancing and upheavals in education. Exploration of self and body through dance, giving time and space for participants who may not have danced previously, to explore dance in a short but concentrated period of time. These workshops are free but participants must be able to commit.
