Making Space: Artist residencies with Astronomers in 2019
NUI Galway Centre for Astronomy is coordinating Making Space as part of the Royal Astronomical Society’s bicentennial celebrations (RAS 200) in the lead up to and including 2020, with a number of community, science and arts projects in Galway City and County. July 2019 is also the 50th anniversary of the first person to walk on the moon. This is the only project in Ireland to join four others from the UK to have received RAS 200 awards.
Making Space is a multi-layered astronomy project that began this year and will culminate in creative events, collaborations and a celebration of astronomy and geophysics in 2019 and 2020. Residencies and collaborations between artists and scientists will take place in 2019, creating new research and artworks. Making Space is now inviting artists to apply for a two month residency where they will work with a scientist to create new research and artworks which will then be exhibited in July 2019.
DESCRIPTION OF RESIDENCY
NUIG and Galway Arts Centre will provide a two month studio residency to four artists. They will work with a scientist from the Department of Astronomy, culminating in an exhibition in Galway Arts Centre in July – August 2019. A residency fee, exhibition fee and financial contribution towards production of work will be provided. Travel expenses and accommodation are NOT provided.
NUI Galway Centre for Astronomy has eight active astronomers working in many areas of astronomy: studying black holes in the centres of distant galaxies, observing rapidly rotating neutron stars known as pulsars, observations of stars and planetary systems in formation, studying new ways of looking for planets outside our solar system and observing enigmatic brown dwarfs – objects which are not quite a star and too big to be a planet. As well as this work the Centre has an active instrumentation group which develops new instruments and ways of seeing for giant telescopes.
