Áine Phillips and members of the Dún Emer Eastside Collective, will be discussing the collaborative process of designing and creating the Decade of Centenaries Banners for “Reflections” a multifaceted, community-focused arts and history programme in Galway in 2023. The project commemorated the significant contributions of Irish women in 1923 during a pivotal era of Irish history.
Áine Phillips is based in Galway. She has exhibited and performed in Ireland and internationally since the late 80’s. Her work incorporates socially engaged practice and she often works with communities of place and or interest, including many collaborations with Irish and international artists. She creates live performance, installation and video works for multiple contexts: public space, social events, galleries, theatres, museums, biennales and film festivals. Curating, writing and teaching are also part of her diverse practice. She is head of sculpture at Burren College of Art.
The Dún Emer Eastside Collective is a group of east Galway women who came together in response to the Decade of Centenaries “Reflections” project in 2023 to create a trilogy of feminist memorial banners. The members of the group are Helen Flynn, Helen Monaghan, Petra Bhreatnach, Rowena Carr, Anita Dillon, Clare Smyth, Demelza Lynn, Lizzy Dargle, Marielle MacLeman and Soňa Šmédková. The collective was led by visual artist Áine Phillips.
“Reflections: In Commemoration of the Irish Women of 1923″ was presented by Galway City Council in partnership with Galway Public Libraries and Galway City Museum. Supported by the Department of Tourism, Culture, Arts, Gaeltacht, Sports, and Media under the Decade of Centenaries 2012-2023 initiative.
