Artist in Schools Residency 2012

Transition Year students at St. Paul’s Secondary School in Oughterard were invited to work with visual artist Marielle MacLeman as part of Galway Arts Centre’s Artist in Schools Residency scheme.  Marielle is currently Artist in Residence at The James Mitchell Geology Museum, NUI Galway and the project at St Paul’s Secondary was informed by her research there. Inspired by geometric forms in geology, students studied the 7 crystal systems and gemstone faceting. Initially drawing and making paper models, students collaborated in assembling these in small temporary installations in various sites throughout the school. These were documented then digitally manipulated in later workshops. Finally, the students worked together to curate and install an exhibition of their work in St. Paul’s Round Room.

Galway Arts Centre would like to thank  Galway County Council and  Clann Resource Centre and for their support in this project.

This Pilot Project will inform GAC’s Artist in Schools’ Policy. An open call for Schools and Artists will be announced in the coming months.
