Red Bird Youth Collective
Saturday, 16 February 2019 10:00 Place: Galway Arts Centre

19 January – 16 February

Red Bird Youth Collective have been working in collaboration with poet Colm Keegan and visual artist Gabrielle Drimalovski. Generously funded by the Arts Council of Ireland's Youth Ensemble Scheme, the aim of this project was to create a video piece where poetry, moving image and sound work together to create one ambitious, original artwork.

Red Bird initially invited Colm to facilitate a word project that explores, using different methodologies, identity, character development and exploratory or experimental documentary within a poetry framework. Red Birds' artistic strength is taking an individual approach that allows them to develop and unpack their own ideas, then collaborate to create one overall artwork. Over 12 weeks the group created work that is developed out of this individual, process-based research, with Gabrielle facilltating the production of a video piece and series of photographs to augment their written work.

Gabrielle Drimalovski is a Galway based visual artist conceptually reflecting the dark side of the human psyche and non-verbal communication, primarily through video and photography. Frequently incorporating use of sound and text-based/spoken narrative, Gabrielle explores the sinister and taboo side of human existence in every aspect of the mind and our actions, thoughts, experiences and beliefs. A recent graduate of the LSAD Photography & Lens Based Media Department, and a former member of Red Bird, she participated in 'Belong', a project funded by YES 2012. She regularly uses text and spoken word in her work, recently focusing on the male gaze and body language.

Colm Keegan is a writer and performance poet from Dublin, Ireland. He also writes short stories, plays and screenplays. He is a poetry/arts reviewer and contributing poet for RTE Radio One’s nightly arts show ARENA and co-founder of ‘Nighthawks at the Cobalt’. He is co-founder and facilitator of Inklinks, a young writers club in Clondalkin and teaches creative writing in secondary schools across Ireland. Colm Keegan's poetry is a soulful yet visceral evocation of what it is to live in a Dublin rarely seen in its un-exaggerated form in the literary world.

Red Bird Youth Collective is a visual arts organisation for ages 15-24. A group of like-minded young people from different backgrounds come together to collaborate on engaging and challenging art projects, and have worked with professional artists on visual art, film, architecture and performance projects. They also engage with other aspects of the arts such as administration, curation, and event organisation. Red Bird is an ideal outside-of-school pursuit for students interested in self-led art projects, writing, music and other artforms.
