Reprisals: An illustrated talk on the short life and tragic death of Eileen Quinn

November 1920 was one of the bloodiest months of the Irish War of Independence. Ambushes and killings were commonplace, and the country was gripped with terror. And in the rolling countryside of South Galway, one event shocked the nation and shook a close-knit community to the core. 24-year-old Eileen Quinn was pregnant and standing outside her home near Gort, Co. Galway with her three children. She was anxiously waiting for her husband to return from the fair. While she was waiting, a military truck passed, and shots were fired directly at Eileen. In the eight hours it took her to bleed to death, a young family’s life was destroyed, and the cover-up had already begun.

Join Eileen’s grandniece, Orla Higgins, in Galway Arts Centre, as she discusses the shocking events of the day, the political aftermath and the catastrophic impact of the murder on future generations of the family.

No booking necessary, however seating is limited.

You can listen to Reprisals, Orla’s radio documentary about Eileen, here on the RTE Radio 1 Documentary on One website: https://www.rte.ie/radio1/doconone/2019/0816/1069115-reprisals/

This talk will take place in Galway Arts Centre, where Bernadette Burns' solo exhibition 'A History of Uncertainty: remembering Eileen Quinn' will be on display.

This exhibition is supported by Galway City Council, the Arts Council of Ireland and the Department of Culture, Heritage and the Gaeltacht.
