Leaving Certificate Art History and Appreciation Study Day

Visual Arts
Tuesday, 21 January 2020 09:00 - 15:00
Place: Nun's Island Theatre

Galway Arts Centre hosts an annual study day for Leaving Certificate Art History and Appreciation students as part of its ongoing education programme.

This year’s study day will be held on Tuesday January 21st from 9am until 3pm in Nun’s Island Theatre and Galway Arts Centre. The lectures will be given by Maeve Mulrennan, Head of Visual Art in Galway Arts Centre.

The study day is intended as an intensive revision course, and not necessarily as an introduction to the topics covered in the Leaving Certificate syllabus.

The course will take the form of six concise lectures which cover Art in Ireland from Pre-Christian to Modern Times and European Art from 1000AD to Present.

The morning sessions will cover pre-Christian and early Christian Ireland, Gothic and Romanesque Architecture and Renaissance Europe. There will also be a brief discussion on essay writing skills. Students will then visit ‘The Uncertainty of History: Remembering Eileen Quinn’ by Bernadette Burns in Galway Arts Centre where the focus will be on Art Appreciation and Exhibition Layout/Design, so that the students will be equipped to answer the ‘Visit to an Art Gallery’ question in Section III.

In the afternoon students can sign up to some or all of our three optional mini-lectures on Impressionism, Georgian Ireland and Irish Modernism.

The price per student is €5 and free admission for teachers. Relevant handouts for each theme will also be provided.
