A playful exhibition of drawings, paintings and sculptures, complemented by a display of dioramas by children from Gaelscoil Iarfhlatha.

In Jennifer Cunningham's imaginative world, abandoned fairgrounds, defunct and derelict lots of land evoke the faded magic of childhood possibility. She is particularly interested in misplaced architecture and abandoned objects, confronting the viewer with the contrasting aesthetic of old and new. The landscapes–sometimes bare, desolate, and even forbidding–are less about representing real views as about reflecting her emotional response to the experience of the encounter. She is using the geography of the imagination’ as a starting point, looking at how a child’s imagination is a place of freedom and play, and a safe space to explore and understand the world around them.

She was particularly interested by Ian Maleneys book “Minor monuements" in particular the chapter ”Below”  where he talks about building Dens and “the feeling of carving out a space of our own, away from the eyes and ears of our parents.”

There’s a dual, interchangeable narrative running through her work: the dissolution of the physical fabric of the recreational landscape, and the psychological progression from the utopian magic of childhood imagination to a dawning awareness of change, loss, complication and limitations.”  - Aidan Dunne, The Irish Times.
