Red Bird Youth Collective is now recruiting new members!

Red Bird Youth Collective is a visual art group for young people aged 15 - 24 living in Galway city & county. Red Bird is run by young people and endeavours to encourage and support creativity for young people in the surrounding community. It is the first youth-led visual art collective in the Republic of Ireland. We are now looking for new members to work on a new project with acclaimed visual artist Marielle MacLeman for 12 weeks, culminating in an exhibition in Galway Arts Centre in 2020.

The group will meet on Friday afternoons from 4-6pm for this 12-week project. The first workshop will be Friday, 27 September at Galway Arts Centre. Workshops are FREE OF CHARGE, and all materials are provided. The requirements to join Red Bird are an interest or passion for art, and no formal background, education or training is necessary. Members also need to commit fully to attendance of workshops. All are welcome.

The aim of the next project is to create a body of work with Marielle MacLeman, using Nuns Island (formerly called Islannaltenage) as a starting point. Members will develop skills with new materials and focus on a research-led, participatory practice.

Established in 2011 by Galway Arts Centre, Red Bird delivers large-scale projects in collaboration with professional artists. Red Bird has collaborated with artists and facilitators on a diverse range of projects including visual art, film, architecture, digital media, graphic novel and literature projects. Alongside the artistic approach, Red Birds also learn the administrative background to these projects, enabling them to recreate similar ventures outside of the group. They will also be exposed to aspects of arts marketing, curation, and event organisation/management relevant to the current project.

Marielle MacLeman is a Scottish artist based in Galway city. She studied Drawing and Painting at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design, Dundee. Working across drawing, painting, installation, design, and participatory approaches, she is interested in the dialogue between materials and narrative, frequently melding context-specific media with artistic competencies. Recent solo exhibitions include The LAB, Dublin, and The Dock, Carrick-on-Shannon, with group shows in the UK, Ireland, France and Italy. She has received awards from The Scottish Arts Council, Glasgow City Council, The Arts Council of Ireland and Galway City Council, and is the recipient of the Arts Council Artist in the Community Scheme Bursary Award 2018: Collaborative Arts in Health Contexts. She has held residencies with Dublin City Council, Galway Arts Centre, The James Mitchell Geology Museum and The Zoology and Marine Biology Museum at NUI Galway, and the Tyrone Guthrie Centre.

Red Bird has received funding from the Arts Council of Ireland, National Youth Council of Ireland & Galway City &County Councils to accomplish these youth-led projects in collaboration with specialist artists and facilitators.
