'In Course of Rearrangement' Exhibition Launch

Visual Arts
Friday, 05 April 2019 18:00 - 20:00

All are welcome to the launch of ‘In Course of Rearrangement’ on Friday 5th April at 6.00pm, accompanied by a publication with a commissioned text by Deirdre O’Mahony. The project was supported by an Arts Council Project Award and developed during a Dublin City Council residency supported by Galway City Council.

Borrowing its title from the placeholder text of an empty museum display case, the exhibition is a playful exploration of Ireland’s natural and industrial heritage, responding to the changing narratives of enterprise, labour, and land use in Dublin’s Liberties and the wider woollen industry. MacLeman articulates the interrelationship of inner city built and natural environments through materials inspired by or directly sourced from sites in transition. Wool coloured with plant dyes is embroidered into scaffolding mesh, a material which shrouded the city during her research – from a public park in development to the National Museum of Ireland, now home to the remnants of The Liberties weaving industry. Working with staff of Dublin City Council’s Parks and Landscapes Services, she created a series of unique handmade paper works to commemorate this new era in the site’s history – gilding and couching the first cut of grass from Weaver Park. Buddleja davidii, introduced from China in the late 1800s, was harvested from waste ground to dye a rug made of Irish wool, a by-product largely considered of little value since exports to China’s carpet industry ceased.

Marielle MacLeman is a Scottish artist based in Galway city. She studied Drawing and Painting at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design, Dundee. Working across drawing, painting, installation, design, and participatory approaches, she is interested in the dialogue between materials and narrative, frequently melding context-specific media with artistic competencies. Recent solo exhibitions include The LAB, Dublin, and The Dock, Carrick-on-Shannon, with group shows in the UK, Ireland, France and Italy. She has received awards from The Scottish Arts Council, Glasgow City Council, The Arts Council of Ireland and Galway City Council, and is the recipient of the Arts Council Artist in the Community Scheme Bursary Award 2018: Collaborative Arts in Health Contexts. She has held residencies with Dublin City Council, Galway Arts Centre, The James Mitchell Geology Museum and The Zoology and Marine Biology Museum at NUI Galway, and the Tyrone Guthrie Centre.
