Procession is a solo exhibition of work produced since 2017 by Limerick based artist Gerry Davis, chronicling a dreamlike progression through ideas associated with painting, identity and the subjective obstacles encountered by a contemporary practicing artist.

Several paintings suggest a fictional narrative with imagery of plein air painting: an artistic congregation, a bonfire and a mysterious journey to a colossal platform. Davis’ more recently created paintings have become more autobiographical, making reference to events in the artist’s own life; a dreamlike recalling of his wedding, or a figure pulling weeds from a grave.

The premise of this exhibition is one of exploration, through painterly means, of self identity, the "shoulds" and "oughts" of artistic practice, and an attempt to arrive at a destination. Because the self-imposed criteria are broad-ranging, this destination remains elusive and ambiguous, and it becomes clearer that the act of painting is always only ever a journey, and that finished paintings exist only as a frozen moment in time along that journey.

Gerry Davis was born in Cahir, Co Tipperary in 1985 and studied at the Limerick School of Art and Design from 2005 to 2009. Since then he has maintained a full-time studio practice which has constantly changed and evolved over the years. He has been a member of Wickham St Studios in Limerick since it's foundation and has exhibited throughout the country, including solo shows at TACTIC in Cork and The Source Arts Centre, Thurles. He has won a merit prize twice at the Golden Fleece Award and in 2016 he won the Hennessy Portrait Prize at the National Gallery. As a result of this he was commissioned to paint the Kilkenny Hurler, Henry Shefflin for the NGI’s Portrait Collection.
