Classical Portrait Drawing Weekend Workshop with Adrian Cooke
Classical Drawing and Painting are not so much individual styles but rather an approach to drawing and painting that favours order, beauty, harmony and completeness. They follow principles that emerged from ancient classical civilizations and rely on methods and techniques that render subject matter in a realistic style. Perfected and codified during the Renaissance, these skills and ideas around design, line, value and form became the bedrock of artistic practice for many centuries. Although Modern Art triumphed over the academic style, many of its greatest figures - Van Gogh, Degas, Klimt, Picasso and others - were classically trained. In the 1960s, Classical Realism - a new style based on the old tradition - emerged, and since then there has been a growing resurgence of interest in these traditional methods and techniques of drawing and painting.
This 2-day workshop introduces you to drawing the classical portrait in pencil and charcoal, covering all of the technical and aesthetic aspects of portrait drawing, from the structure and anatomy of facial features to achieving likeness and creating expression. You will be shown all aspects of portrait drawing, starting with the technical attributes of drawing the face and head, and then beginning to explore the more expressive qualities of this human subject. Saturday will be spent working on preliminary exercises including master copy drawing and transcending the photo reference. On Sunday, you will put all of your learning into practice drawing a model from life. Some of the subject areas covered include:
• Approach to Classical Portraiture
• Structure and Anatomy of the Head for Artists
• Detailed Study of Facial Features: Eyes, Nose, Mouth, Etc.
• Working with Design, Line, Value and Form
• Lighting Your Subject
• Achieving Likeness and Expression
