Detailed Outline:

Palette Mixing

Based on close observation of the model, create color/value strings and discuss the transition of temperature across the form. Demo of adjusting values and hues.

Utilise abstract thinking to achieve realism

Find the most conspicuous abstract shape on the face, and begin there. Often, this is the forehead or broad planes of the cheek. When placing this shape on your surface, consider the overall composition. You may have to wipe it off and start over a couple of times. Once this first shape is accurate, continue to block in the masses of the bone structure and shape of the head, avoiding painting the features themselves (these will emerge later).

13:00-14:00 Lunch Break

Establish dark and light values

Find the the shadows first, and once those are established, the light values. Just because an area of stark contrast may exist in real life doesn't mean it must be painted that way...Remember your design and stick to your vision. Use realism as a tool.

Features & Expression

Consider the features and expression in the same abstract mindset as the larger masses. As long as the bone structure and large plains are considered, the features ought not to take up too much time.

Review and Finish up

This hour will be for those last adjustments, a quick review, and a quick run down on how to properly clean and care for brushes, palette knives, and palettes.
