Welcome to Galway Arts Centre’s winter programme of classes starting in January 2010 we hope you will find a course to suit you. Adult daytime classes start the week of Monday the 18th of January and run for 10 weeks.

Workshopping Our Writing(Beg) with Susan Millar Du Mars
Mondays 2-3.30pm (10 weeks) €110/100 (8 places)
This class is suitable for both beginning and continuing creative writing students, working in either poetry or fiction. Students will spend their week responding to writing exercises designed to inspire, rather than inhibit. In class, they will receive gentle feedback on their work from their classmates and from the teacher. They will then be expected to edit their pieces in time for the final class. Thus, students will gain experience in giving and responding to constructive criticism; and will, by the end of the course, have perhaps half a dozen polished pieces of writing finished. An ideal course for anyone who wants help
Creative Writing Poetry (Advanced) with Kevin Higgins
Thursdays 2-4pm (10 weeks) €110/100 (8 places)
When is a poem complete? How does a poet find his or her poetic voice? How does a poet make the transition from writing individual poems to putting a first collection together? During the ten week advanced poetry class Kevin Higgins will attempt to answer all these questions, and more. This class is suitable for those who have done poetry workshops before, or for those who’ve already begun publishing poems in magazines.
Paint Studio Workshop with Maeve Curtis
Tuesdays 10.15am to 1.15pm 10 weeks 3 hours workshop 8 places maximum (INTERMEDIATE)
Cost €170/160
This course explores the properties of acrylic paint by working initially from everyday objects, exploring tone, temperature, how to use primary colours as the starting point for an extensive palette with which to play and experiment with colour mixtures, optical colour mixing and temperatures before each participant embarks upon an exploration of their own chosen theme. Each participant is actively encouraged to develop critical and analytical skills within the group whilst sharing their own work. Please bring an A3 acrylic primed sketchbook, a range of brushes, and acrylic paints cadmium yellow paint, cadmium lemon, cadmium red, alizarin crimson, ultramarine blue, cerulean blue and titanium white, palette knife and palette.
Drawing Studio Workshop with Maeve Curtis
Wednesdays 10.15 -1.15pm 10 weeks (3 hours) 8 places maximum (INTERMEDIATE)

This course explores the power of drawing to transform the world around us. Using everyday objects, we will experiment with different ways of making marks and pushing what our understanding of a drawing is through line drawing, tonal studies, textural explorations, multimedia, sculpture etc.. Each participant is actively encouraged to develop critical and analytical skills within the group whilst sharing their own work. Please bring an A3 sketchbook, HB, B, 2B, 2B, 4B pencils, erasers, pens, coloured chalk, charcoal, ink, watercolour pencils.
Writing Life Stories with Mary Mullen
Fridays 12.30-2pm (10 weeks) €110/100 (8 places)
There is only one you! Come learn how to get started on your own memoir. This course will explore the concept of memoir and your own memories from many angles. You will learn how to focus in on a few parts of your life that have been particulary meaningful to you and how to get a few gems of your own personal history down on paper. All ages cordially welcomed, all writing levels catered for in this workshop-based course.
The Creative Actor with Sarah O Toole
Wednesday 2-4pm (10 weeks) €130/120 10 places
This is a ten week course in exploring the creative possibilities around preparing for an an acting role. It is based around the famous Michael Chekhov technique which stimulate the connection between the inner and physical life of a character, bypassing the intellect and providing access to the rich imaginative and instinctual core we all possess. We also explore a variety of creative techniques and play with using other art-forms to gain access to a scene/role/play. The main focus is on the autonomy of the actor as creative artist with a wide range of tools to create and bring ideas and characters to the rehearsal room which delight and surprise directors and audiences alike...and of course to have fun while doing this! The course is suitable for anyone with an interest in drama or even other creative artists with an interest in the crossover between theatre and their medium.
